sorry, bad wording. Many laws of the old testament do not apply anymore, but many of them were extended to the new testament for several reasons. Laws on slavery are those laws that we do not use today. But this is why it is tough to talk about these things in online forums. I explain one thing but if I word something wrong someone immediately says i'm a liar. Just because people don't understand the whole topic fully doesn't mean it is a lie. Another problem is that many clerics out there say a bunch of crap as well, so people immediately assume the Bible is false. I do not know if you are christian or not, but if you are, you should know what i'm talking about haas.

+1 On Otto's explanation of the Hebrew Scriptures. Personal study of the scriptures and scrutinizing the translation you use is important. Also no matter how harsh the laws were in ancient times, those were laws the Israelites agreed to live by. We are not bound by them. But they are an excellent source of insight for getting to know God

I believe no religious book to be an accurate historical record.

^especially if it's been edited for hundreds of years, and to even have entire chapters taken out, due to people at the time not believing it actually happened (such as lilith). you may as well call it a wiki page.

Unless you are a religious person who believes it 100% and preach it to others like here on a forum. And if questioned about some parts that are hard to answer you can say "I have faith" or "God moves in mysterious ways" it is truly laughable how convenient that is and how overwhelmly ridiculous it sounds to any open minded logical person. But worse still they are also comfortable asking/demanding people to prove theories on evolution and not seem to care how idiotic they sound.

The last four lines of my previous post already answered Panama and Otto.

Also, Sawyer, pretty sure you're not preaching to the choir with Hass, although I could be wrong. Meaning, I'm relatively sure he's religious.

Oh yes, me so holy...
My god has goat legs, plays a flute, and bangs nymphs.
Just kidding. I'm not religious. Agnostic, at best. Atheist, at most realistic.

Well that's interesting. Gotta ask, I'm pretty sure you're more main stream conservative than I and probably vote Republican. Out of curiosity, do you feel any animosity towards the Republican Party for their very clear religious stances?

Also, Otto, while that law might very well indeed have a better meaning. However, the preceding lines concern rape and thus indicate the connotation is thus. We must also bear in fact that the law does not exclude the crime of rape and we should expect a perfect being to have better laws than this. Frankly, even in the brightest possible light the law would still represent a male-centric law that does not take into account the wishes of the woman involved.

Also Otto, I asked Yoni about the text in Hebrew since he's currently in Israel doing a religious study. :)

This is soo right. Either you Athiests are correct, and we go to eternal nothingness when we die, which wouldn't be so bad, or us Christians are right, and we go to Heaven, and infinite eternal bliss. By believing in God (the God of the Bible, that is) you really have nothing to lose, and everything to gain. Your choice :th_a017:
And Panama, you darn northerner, it's spelled "y'all" :oldman:

Ah, Pascal's Wager. That's a logical fallacy by the way.

Check here, here, and here. The last one is the best, by the way.
