About download speed, a lot of conditions apply:
1- How many people are downloading?
2- By whom was the game your downloading manufactured
3- Is you location of the download server correct?
Also about Xfire, i tend to get "high latency" errors, never had those with steam, even tough Xfire is better for comunication it lacks support for new games.
