Here's another Google maps tidbit....
Google Map directions from California to Japan to China
Check out instructions #18, #33, and #108.
I guess they figure that you would run out of gasoline if you tried to use the same mode of transportion in steps #18 and #33 as you use in step #108....

Kayak across the Pacific Ocean...seems reasonable to me.
