Star Wars vs Star Trek

Postby WD-40 » Mon May 30, 2011 8:51 pm

I'll just throw my cards on the table. I was born in 1962. I was 15 when Star Wars Episode 4 came out. Yes, I acknowledge that I, and perhaps Brazos are the older farts. But we are…as 'Girl' would say…COOL! This is way before most of you were even a wet spot on your parent's sheets…No offense. :whistling:

GAWD what a movie! But I grew up on Star 'Trek' in the 1960's. Sorry guys, but I am who I am, and that's when the Good Lord put me here! I must admit, I love Star Wars more than Trek, but it has never left my mind that without 'Trek', where would 'Wars' be? Did it have even the 'slightest' influence on Lucas…beyond anything he has admitted?

[not a word], both 'stories' take place in opposite ends of the universe and at different times. Different enough..but the same impact. Both garnered a strong following in our 'real' world, and both created various 'geek squads'. I've been watching a Star 'trek' marathon on the SciFy channel and…have to admit…it's good stuff. Brings back my earlier years. I'm not going to go any deeper than that, as Narg would m'kay the crap outta me. Narg…you make me laugh.

In all seriousness, what is your opinion of Star Wars vs Star Trek?

I am one of few Star Wars fans that like both Star Wars and Star Trek. I have enjoyed all things Trek through the years. I really liked the new reboot of Trek and I am looking forward to more. The original Trek was so cool, but then Star Wars came out and the Trek special effects were put to shame. Still like both franchises though. Star Wars is where its at!!! :punk:

Look, you can like whatever you want, but if you ever use the non word "[not a word]" again I will... retaliate. (not sure how but I will)

Wanna know the sad part of all this? I like Dr. Who's spaceship better. Tom Baker was awesome.... :whistling:

Both are great!

Trek was the first and was awesome...SW took it to the next level. SW has 2 concepts that will keep it head-and-shoulders above Trek and will keep it on top for decades to come:
1. The continual story of Good vs. Evil, and
2. The storyline as seen through 1 constant character, Anakin (good times, bad times, relatable emotion).

SW FTW!

Just my opinion, though. :)

Funny you mention this one. I seem to recall a sound bite from George Lucas where he explained that the entire saga/story was kind of unique because it was told through a robot...namely R2D2. I think the sound byte is in the extra material on one of the DVDs....

And yes, I love them both. I was a youngster pretending to be Scotty, Spock, or Capt Kirk long before I went to see Star Wars. I'm pretty sure I was sitting in front of the TV watching a trek episode when we found out Elvis had been beamed up (left the building as it were)...

Looking back on the original it is funny to watch Kirk string out and pause his sentences for more effect and get the girl, Spock raising his eyebrows, Chekov with his distinctly Russian voice, Sulu firing the Phasers and keeping an eye on the shields, Scotty on about the engines and Bones being decidly moody and Uhura in those skimpy outfits and that ear piece...lol. Star Trek got me into Sci-Fi. I Watched STNG, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise and I am looking forward to the next Trek Film.

Then Star Wars came out and wow it was fantastic watching the first film with the Star Destroyer coming onto the screen, nobody had ever seen a ship so big and then when the Storm troopers and Vader came down the corridor of the rebel blockade runner with blasters firing. Every kid around where I lived was hooked. It would be good if they could make the SWTOR into a CGI film like the clips on the website or alternatively with a decent set of actors to carry the story off.
Look at the past to improve the future.

Well I missed the first star wars in theater becuase i was 1 at the time.. I did see Star wars esb though.. albeit in a German theater with german subtittles ( i was visiting my grandparents and it was that or the aristocats..lol.. I think my 8 years older brother helped make the decision). I have also watched a lot of Star trek through the years and have enjoyed those as well, although i prefer TNG to the originals. I think that Star trek made a good tv series where i don't think star wars would have.. I also couldn't stand Mark Hamill in the first star wars.. sheesh what an annoying kid..lol.. Both shows are epic in their own ways. I love seeing the items in the shows come to real life though, who would have though that we could hold a device in our hand without wires and call someone like Kirk did. Genius beyond his years. Oh ya, a bit off topic but did any of you see that star wars christmas special?..lol.. i borrowed it a few years ago from someone, I think i sat through about 10 mins before I was nauseated and turned it off. Ahh George, you have been lucky that we have forgiven you for your transgressions including howard the duck. Well, enough rambling I guess.
