Paula Deen -- Racist or Victim.. discuss.

I say she got the royal shaft on this one. In too many areas racism is a one way street.... all about the minorities, whether they be Afr.American, Latino, or Arabian, typically get away with calling the whites names, but when those words are turned on them, its all out war..

Example -- in high school I got called a "Straight Up Virgin Honkey B****" by one of the African Americans that attended my high school (cause I wouldn't "get fresh" with her brother) and nothing happened to the girl who called me that, but then a week later a friend called him a "Cherry Popping Gangster" (he slept with a different friend then dumped her) and the friend got EXPELLED!! The N word did NOT come out, but what he said was "racist" enough to be punishable. There is a double-standard when it comes to the use of racial slurs depending on who directs the words and who is the target.

I don't like her. She is as fake as the day is long. That being said, what someone said ten years ago? Come on. Also, I do believe there is a double standard. Whites use the N-word = racist. Blacks use the N-word = comedian, rapper, frustrated artist. Give me a break.

Normally I'd agree with you Nite. I do believe there is a huge double-standard. Except she didn't just casually say the N word in conversation. She actually was being racist.

I forget certain specifics of the story, but they don't mat.ter. She was talking about a wedding(her daughter's or something), and in reference to the catering there she said something close to "Now if only we had some n****r's in white suits to do the catering, we'd have a perfect southern wedding."

There's saying the N-word, and then there's being a racist. She deserved the shaft she got.

Basically, Deen, her brother, their restaurant, and their enterprise is being sued for workplace discrimination. A week before the lawsuit was filed the PLAINTIFF'S attorneys sent Deen, et al's legal council a warning with a settlement offer of 1.25 million for the plaintiff for her financial losses. It is the PLAINTIFF that is alleging that Deen made that statement regarding her brother's wedding and wanting the african americans to dress like slaves. I don't put ANY stock in what the plaintiff is alleging considering the blatant extortion that has taken place.

In a deposition for the lawsuit Paula Deen admitted to using the N word in 1987 when an african american man held her at gunpoint and robbed her. She used the word in a police report so it was something she HAD to admit to.

The plaintiff is claiming that her reason for suing Deen, Bubba (Deen's brother), and the enterprise was because she was allegedly "blacklisted/blackballed" in the Savannah, Georgia area after she quit her job at Uncle Bubba's Oyster House after allegedly suffering 5 years of sexual discrimination, harassment, and exposure to porno, and assault.

In my opinion, if the stuff about Bubba Hiers is true then HE should be taking the fall, and owning up to this. In a normal employment setting one would have been given "sensitivity training" if they were being accused of racial slurs on the job, HOWEVER, none of this happened on Food Network's clocks so they should have stayed out of it, same goes for WalMart, and Smithfield Foods.

If Chris Rock said that, it would be funny.

I agree 100% with what Duel said. I can't stand her, but she got screwed on this one.

It's quite depressing that anyone is willing to defend her after what she's admitted to saying, let alone what she's accused of.

Yeah, you are right Crater. We should just stone her and drive her from the village. Being accused of something and being guilty of something, two totally different animals.

I seem to have failed at wording again. I was trying to make the same distinction you are between fact and accusation. What she's admitted to makes it pretty clear that she's a reprehensible person. I can see where I went wrong and I thank you for your post, though.

It's pretty impressive how you can manage to propose discussion on a topic, and then spend exactly one sentence staying on subject before resorting to personal anecdotes that are irrelevant to the discussion at hand. Also, who the [m'kay] cares about what someone said in high school? Jesus christ, i've already forgotten most of the stupid [poo] that was tossed around back then and i'm only a single year out of it.

Reprehensible? One word coming from your lips makes you a reprehensible person? I will let you in on a little secret then, EVERYONE is reprehensible. EVERYONE has said the N-Word or worse. People who claim they "have never", are out and out hypocrites. And to consider someone reprehensible over something said 10 years ago or more?

Like I said, I find her reprehensible for many other things, including her make-up and her complete lack of fashion sense. But I will be damned if I am going to throw the PC book of stupidity at someone for something they said a decade or more ago.
