Cop Quotas

My girlfriend and I had lunch with my cousin and her boyfriend, who is a cop in the Dallas area, and I was asking him some of the questions I had about cops, and the one that really surprised me was that he said that the department actually had quotas that they are expected to meet. And that, at times, they will pull someone over for something they normally wouldn't, just to meet quota. I know to some this might be already known information, but being 16, I have always been told cops are our guardians, and are only looking out for our safety, but he told some really shady stories that contradict what most kids would would assume cops do and are. What do you guys think? Any shady cop stories to share?

I don't have a problem with that... I don't have anything to hide. What bothers me is when the cops go above the speed limit when they are not chasing someone. In my opinion, that gives a bad example and I see this all the time. In fact, many of these cops tailgate while i'm going at the speed limit. If a cop can't follow the law in the minimum, then he is able to break the law in other things.

but back to quotas.... I am sure that those quotas are so low that they are just probably there to make sure the cop does something during the month. Because if the quota is too high and the cop is forced to "break the law" to check normal citizens, then that could be found out and turn into a scandal.

I agree completely. Some cops just like acting on their "dominance". When I was driving with my permit, "Got my licence today!" I got pulled over and the cop said "Son do you realize you were going 41 in a 40, I'm going to need you to step out of the car." I asked him if he was being serious (in a sharp tone) and he said if I didn't get out then he would arrest me for obstruction of justice; of which to I asked for him to tell me which branch of justice if was obstructing. He then just walked away, got in his car, and drove off. I just feel some of these cops don't even know the law and have a need to feel like a bad ass and rule through fear over the people they were hired to protect.

On the contrary---they are not "so low." Whenever the police give tickets, the city/county makes money. Cops are instructed to write a certain number each month not to ensure they do they jobs, but the contrary. In many places, officers are penalized for failing to give the department's requisite number of tickets.

Quotas are strictly illegal, but exist as an unspoken code of regulation that one must comply with in order to be eligible for certain promotions and have a pleasant career.

Couldn't agree more Pi. My cousin's boyfriend said that they needed to reach the quota to obtain bi-monthly bonuses. @Otto, They are not, as Pi said, low, but they are not excessive, but the quota is where you're going to have to bend the law to service all the tickets
