swtor - space expansion

Postby CommanderOtto » Wed Oct 09, 2013 5:18 am

I was excited about the whole thing for about 5 minutes until I watched the video. This isn't an expansion.... it is more like a bigger update that added a few maps for 12vs12 pvp space combat. This "expansion" is basically using the same format as current space battles and the only difference seems to be that you can freely move your ship.

my major dissapointments:

1. Space combat still looks like an arcade game.
2. we probably won't have the ability to explore space, like in Star Wars Galaxies.
3. we probably won't be able to invite friends on board so they can man some turrets (like in Star Wars Galaxies).
4. few ships available. I see they have a good selection of one-man fighters but I don't see anything "big".
5. we still can't decorate the inside of our ships.

I mean, I remember that in galaxies we could even buy a space yatch and invite friends to hang out in the lobby of the luxurious ship. Amazing how a game that died is still way better in space combat than SWTOR.

I recently resubbed to SWTOR to check it out. (I often do that to see how it's changed)

Not enough info to get me excited yet. If you can't move your ship (ie if it follows the scripted course) then the expansion will be a huge let down.

In the MMO there are exhaustion zones to prevent players from being going to places outside the map area. Think about it, you have a ship in space, 'X' amount of miles from the next person, simply going through space...doing nothing and is this boring, hell yes. If you want an open space sim that you can travel around then go for EVE online.

Partying with friends onboard your ship...why? Most of the missions at the moment are on the planets which you can do with friends.

The expansion from what I can gather will have a map boundary. If you are in space battle you don't want a member of the party to be going on a jaunt and leaving the rest of the team. We have a boundary wall on SWBF2, it's likely TOR will do the same.

Decorations, hardly something big on my radar for my ship but who knows the developers might bring that feature in like they have with character customizations.

Most people slate the game because it is lacking in 'X, Y or Z' area. Considering how far it has been developed over this last year I'd say most people's expectations are way 2 high considering there has been a lot of development work put into the game. I see more people playing TOR than I have ever done and people who have left the game have come back to F2P and others have re-subscribed. The guild I am in on the red eclipse is very active, lots to be involved with and PVP dings all the time compared to when I was on another shard and it was like a ghost town, pvp was far and few between and people were bored.

No game I have seen meets the expectations of everyone's requirements and I doubt one will given a player will want a feature that is not included.

that's because you have never seen space combat in Galaxies. It kicked ass.

You could use your ship to attack NPC's (enemy vessels in certain space areas) and as I said before, some player ships were huge... some had several floors and players could run around fixing the damage and others sitting in turrets shooting other ships while the pilot could move the ship around. And considering that we don't have player owned houses, it would be nice to add a personal touch to the inside of my ship. I hate to know what every trooper has the same ship as I do. I remember you could put different colors and posters with your favorite star wars characters. You could add banners and trophies of your biggest kills... and even if you don't like inviting friends to your ship, you could always just have fun personalizing it, working and getting credits to put your own touch. On top of that, you could take ships to the atmosphere and fly above the cities. It was awesome.

Lol, in the last days of galaxies several players would park their space yatch right above the battles in tatooine so they could have a good view of the whole thing. Other players would fly their ships and crash straight into the pit of carkoon.

Actually I have seen space combat in SWG and dogs fights and at the time it did look good. What I don't understand is this is a different game, mechanics, number of players and approach. SWG failed massively even if the space combat for its time looked top notch. SWBF2 space combat is not that visually stunning and has limitations but as this is an FPS it makes sense.

As I said you cannot satisfy the expectations of everyone in terms of game mechanics/features etc.

true, but I pay 15 bucks a month, so even though they can't satisfy everyone, I feel that they could have done a better job and learn a bit from the older game to give us players a better experience :whistling: I mean, if they are creating an expansion, why not add those feature? You know what I mean?

Yeah but they have invested in other aspects of the game and in terms of adding those features the coding, development time and cost to create a free/open space area etc is a significant amount of effort. I cannot recall the game every stating this was to be included from the onset. If I did not read what it was about, purchased it but then expected additional content which was not there then I am afraid the only person at fault is me from not doing my research, especially if I subscribed to it. You might be wasting your money if you are holding-out for something like open space/planetary based ship exploration, ship partying etc in the guise of SWG. :whistling:

I know, I am just fooling myself into believing it will happen... but I might as well dream right? I can already imagine people playing with the rythim augmentation droid and others fixing the hyperdrive while a few just hang out near the ship's guns :afro:

besides, I feel sorry for all of those people who play swtor and have not had the chance to experience galaxies.lol

Not debating this. What I meant was that if the new space PvP is like normal space missions (where you move mouse to aim and don't actually change course because that's the scripted path) then it will be a let down. Of course the map will have boundaries, but I would like to move freely instead of the arcade style play.

From what I have heard so far it appears that you don't have a rail-system, you can undertake free flight and engage with others in PVP combat which if this is the case would make it like SWBF2, obviously I can see it being as fluid given it's an MMO but you never know. I think we have to wait for more video clips and information from the developers to see exactly what the new content will contain.
