If there isn't anywhere for us to play, we will be ravenous for the new game when it comes out. That way there won't be those who will be content to just play BF2 instead of getting the new Battlefront. It creates greater interest and sales in the game.
They did the same thing with Star Wars The Clone Wars by ending the show to build for Star Wars Rebels in 2014 and Hasbro has limited the Star Wars action figures so collectors and kids will be hungry for them again when they are released in 2015. Just my two cents.
Gamespy is not affiliated with either EA or Disney as far as I know. They were bought out a few years ago, rumor was solely for their server technology. There wouldn't be a reason to shut down SWBF2 for strategic reasons anyways. There are maybe 200-300 players online actively, let's be really conservative and say there are 10,000 people who still play offline across all consoles. That's out of a total of 3.5+ million sales for the game. That's a [poo] number and not even worth the time, effort, and capital to shut down and deal with the community.
