Jedi Power wrote:I think the closure is strategic. Not that I like it mind you. What a better way do create further interest in the new Battlefront game due out in 2015. If there isn't anywhere for us to play, we will be ravenous for the new game when it comes out. That way there won't be those who will be content to just play BF2 instead of getting the new Battlefront. It creates greater interest and sales in the game.

They did the same thing with Star Wars The Clone Wars by ending the show to build for Star Wars Rebels in 2014 and Hasbro has limited the Star Wars action figures so collectors and kids will be hungry for them again when they are released in 2015. Just my two cents.

Gamespy is not affiliated with either EA or Disney as far as I know. They were bought out a few years ago, rumor was solely for their server technology. There wouldn't be a reason to shut down SWBF2 for strategic reasons anyways. There are maybe 200-300 players online actively, let's be really conservative and say there are 10,000 people who still play offline across all consoles. That's out of a total of 3.5+ million sales for the game. That's a [poo] number and not even worth the time, effort, and capital to shut down and deal with the community.

Darn! I just start getting back into the game and this happens. But lean more towards the optimistic side, I think something will work itself out here.

Actually JP's post makes sense. Even though, I think this game is an exemption (my opinion, which of course is biased), every player in this game has been waiting for a sequel. We can't compare SWBF1, or any other game to said strategy since sequels were expected and made. If they knew how hungry SWBF2 players are for a sequel, they would know that SWBF2 will not get in the way of sales for Battlefront. But as always.. it's the bottom line they care for (profits), not loyalty or keeping players happy. Imagine, Battlefront sucks and now we are totally screwed. If they make this game right (Battlefront), they shouldn't have too worry about SWBF2.

Oh, on a side note Mandy, every time I read Otto's quote on your signature, I want to say Otto's name is original. I've never seen another Otto in this game, but I have seen quite a few Mandolores. Just saying. :innocent:

HAHAH TAKE THAT MANDY!!! thanks Pan :innocent:

but... on this subject, I never thought this day would come since Steam has been selling so many copies. I thought that whoever is providing the masterserver service would be forced to keep it working since so many people have bought the game recently. I guess I was wrong. If they cut off the server list, then this game is doomed. I really hope that they wait for at least the new battlefront to come out. This is just terrible news. Not only will be it bad for the game, but it will seriously diminish activity in our forums as well =(

EDIT: didn't see they were shutting down on May 31st. Man, this really sucks.

Lots of mandalorian type names, as for Mandalore, know of only DW Mandalore before my time and some PS2 good. Assorted nobos as well, but when MM and I were both active I had admin control directly or indirectly through every server and had those taken care of ;)

I thought this might happen just before Swbf DICE came out, pleasantly surprised that they actually gave us a warning though.

But hey even if a backup system doesn't happen, 9 years for a glitchy, buggy, unfinished game like this ain't bad. I think we at SWGO can take some of the credit for keeping it going for as long as it did on the PC side of things.

Big round of applause for matt et al for making that possible :appl:

still, I have a little more than 3 years playing this game. I feel pretty sad about these news. So, has Eyes come up with a solution or something? Just wondering.

I agree, SWGO had a lot to do with the continued popularity of the game, even though it is much less than in the past.

9 years is not bad at all.

I wonder if the new SWBF will allow dedicated servers. If so we can migrate there.

I certainly hope so.

Eyes Only wrote::whistling: Shows how little is known about the actual game. A Gamespy account is only used for player stat tracking and social features. Games that use the Gamespy SDK rely on the master server for client-server connections, and more importantly NAT negotiation. Without the lobby and natneg functions of the master server, online functions of the game are broken.

Edit: Darn, bryant you were #2 on the big 3 list. Anyone that knows C++ can help :3

Could it be possible to redirect the lobby and natneg functions to something like OpenSpy by modifying the BattlefrontII.exe of the server software? I was just browsing through the exe in a hex editor and found what appear to be the addresses that the server looks for to perform those functions.

Code: Select all
$s.available.gamespy.com
$s.master.gamespy.com
natneg2.gamespy.com
natneg1.gamespy.com

As for getting the game to look to OpenSpy instead of GameSpy is simple on the PS2 version. You just change the DNS setting of the network configuration. I don't know about the PC version though.
