Servers Due??

Hello!

A fine player ( (SS)Jimmy ) claimed today Gamespy could prevent steam and you guys from keeping the servers up,
Is this true? Should we be worried, perhaps mail Gamespy, personally I thought that Gamespy has no power over these servers or steam.
Are there other threats?
If so, I'd be happy to send some mails.

Kind Regards,

General Carrier

I doubt they would care. The Neverwinter Knights community as well as dozens of games on the PS2 have been kept alive post-Gamespy through OpenSpy or other master list emulation or DNS re-routing techniques. Assuming there is a law against this, they simply don't care.

To be completely honest, the problem is difficult to address. Eyes Only is working on a solution, but if Gamespy shuts down its Master Server, we will lose most of our players. It's possible that the game developers could shift support of the multiplayer function to another system, but you'd have to contact them.

We are very fortunate that we've received a warning before Glu Mobile pulls the plug. This gives the community headroom to find and develop a solution.

There is nothing you, nor the community can do, to prevent this shutdown from happening; it is not under our control, since the company who acquired GameSpy Industries is not planning to deviate from their decision.

We can only work around the problem to find our own solution.

It is just a shame that all of this is happening now instead of a few months before the release of SWBF3. We likely have over a year to go before it comes out.

What people can do is put a message on their current servers to download Tunngle, to continue online play after May 31st. This could be done with messages in game, and also in the server name field on the server list. This is the best time to let the fringe players know about this, the players who don't participate in forums or check SWBF2 websites, that they can continue to play via LAN option with Tunngle (tunngle.net).

The hardcore players will stick around, but many others will think that there are no online play options and move on to something else.

When the administration decides whether to continue on past the gamespy shutdown or not, and what method of continuation we'll use we will let the masses know. I plan on speaking to M@tt this week sometime and get his feelings on the matter. Until then we should just hold on to our shorts and let the powers that be think things out...

Cheers!! :th_a017:

It will likely be at the point where you can no longer play on a full, or near full server randomly. Only when a concerted effort is made to get people on at a certain time.
