Is it me or is Windows Update a smelly poohead?

After a year of owning a laptop which was never connected to the internet (I only used it for typing up work etc.), I connected it, because my desktop needs a wireless network adapter which I have yet to buy.
Once I was connected, I decided it would be a sensible thing to do to fully update my laptop, since there would be an awful lot that needed bringing up to date. After a very, very long period of waiting for downloads to finish, several restarts etc., I was done.

I have noticed that prior to doing this, the startup time was ~1 minute. It is now ~2-3 minutes. This is without any new programs, antivirus etc. being installed.

Is there any way to get around Windows Update having this adverse impact on one's computer, and has anyone else experienced this?

Yes corpse i have expirienced this before.
What i did is change the programs that start up when windows starts.

Due to doing this my computer starts up faster then it did before.

Ill give details of how to in about an hour.

MT
I'm on my phone ATM but when i get home ill give more details.

It basicly consists in making the computer not automaticly starting up programs that you barly use.
This way as your computer starts less programs it starts faster.

Thanks for trying to help, but I had already been managing my startup programs. The fall in performance I have experienced has happened in spite of this,

Try restoring to the previous settings that didn't have adverse effects on your computer, and then installing the updates after performing a clean boot.

Yes, always download the drivers from manufacturer. Well 90% of the time do that anyway.

Thanks, that may have been where I went wrong. However, I still haven't got round to connecting my desktop, and probably won't for a long time.

I'd download the free trial of tuneup utilities and clean and defrag the registry.
