I totally agree with Draigun on the Kaspersky Anti-Virus/Security Program. It costs money, and can load it on 3 computers. Works great, and doesn't interfere with gaming. It will recognize the game (ie BF2) as a low threat, so you click to accept, and it remembers not to interfere.
I have found Norton to be a processing hog as well. Slowed my computer WAY down. A definite pain. Had to take it to Best Buy Geeeks to get it off my computer, cause when I tried to uninstall, it latched into my hard drive like a virus, and wouldn't allow me to load kaspersky.
I was told months ago about the free download 'Game Booster', which made a huge difference as well. "It works by defragmenting game directories, temporarily shutting down background processes, cleaning RAM, and intensifying processor performance. That means you can keep all the features of operating systems ready for when you need them, but turn them off when you are ready to get down to serious business – gaming." (from the website). And it doesn't 'screw' with my computer.
I know, alot of people know about GameBooster, but for those that don't, it works really good.
Ohh...Glad you're able to join the servers Duck! (Back on Topic)
