So like where I live, Chicago gave I can't remember how many tens of millions of dollars to Boeing to move their corporate headquarters to Chicago - which includes allowing them to not pay taxes, get the land for free, etc - and this is a very common arrangement.

It is extremely common because it makes good business sense. The city's investment is returned in the form of increased sales taxes, payroll taxes, land transfers, real-estate price raises, and etc. You could make a circular argument that the company is getting handouts on the backs of the local population. In the end the local population, usually, comes out better with these types of arrangements. Hence why they are very common.

There is a interesting debate about gun law reduction and deterrence to crime. At the moment the crime numbers are backing the gun toting Americans.
