Overall school ratings are really pretty meaningless unless you intend to major in every degree program they offer. What really matters is

- Is the degree program which you are interested in one that is highly respected regionally/nationally?

Probably the best indicator of whether it is or not would be to find out stats about companies that recruit future employees out of that college program relative to the same discipline/program from other universities.

Put another way, if you are going to be a graphic artist find out which universities business/media goto "first" to recruit newly graduating talent. The answer is rarely going to be one of the generically top-rated schools. Of course, however, it does depend on the discipline you choose.

I agree with you Flyswamper. This list is based off of a composite of all the opportunities offered at the university. Obviously, someone pursuing music would put Julliard as America's best college, and like-wise for any other major and the college that best meets that major's needs.
