This is why I think Steam is a STEAMing pile of [poo]:
1) Steam security blows.
With Steam storing lots of valuable credit card information and what not, obviously their security system should be top-notch. Especially since they manage over 1,800 games and has more than 35 million users across 237 countries. This year they showed off a feature that would help protect Steam accounts from hacks, but after they were recently hacked it seems pretty clear to me that they can't even come up with proper security to help protect your valuable information like game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. If we can't trust those [derriere orifice] to have good security, we shouldn't have to risk our information to buy games off of them.
2) Poor download rates
The greedy cocks over at valve don't seem have any good servers over here at the East. It seems to me that you only get good download speeds over at the Europe and America - the two places where it's packed it gamers ready to buy [poo] off of Steam. Now to me, that seems unfair. I want to buy some big games off of Steam, but I am not waiting 5-6 days. My speed reaches 50-150kbps on Steam when trying to download updates whereas I hear other people getting great speeds up to 1mbps. When I download other stuff not on Steam my speed reaches up to 300-400kbps.
3) "Steam needs to be running to play this game" WHAT THE [m'kay]?
Now this is the thing that pisses me off the MOST. Why in the hell would I need a stupid program to be running to play my lovely games?? Honestly, it's the most retarded thing I have ever come across on the computer. I paid good money to play my games and I don't need it bugging the crap out of me. I have run into many problems when it comes to starting up Steam. I've tried to start up Steam in offline mode sometimes since my internet can [poo] itself most of the times, and it still struggles to actually work properly. It's like a flightless bird. A bloody penguin really. Not to mention how much RAM it eats up sitting there idly, [m'kay] your computer to oblivion.
I look at the Steam FAQ for help. To my unbelievable surprise they say:
"Examine Background Applications and Running Processes
Background applications - especially programs which require bandwidth (chat clients, FTP programs, web browsers, etc) - may contribute to choppy gameplay, a low framerate, and other symptoms of lag.
Please see the Disabling Background Applications topic for instructions to disable any unnecessary background applications before loading Steam."
What the hell. Honestly, they're real dumb asses. If they had half the damn mind of how much RAM and CPU it can use up, they'd have the option to NOT have Steam running while playing the games. But unfortunately, they're just too caught up in their own world trying to fix security - That doesn't work either! Yaaaaaaay.
The ONLY good thing I can think about Steam is it's ingame chat. It works so much better than xfire ingame. And that's where the "best" things end at, ladies and gentlemen.
