So I got a call from the National Guard the other day...

I figured it was just going to be more "hello we want you to join the military just like the rest of your graduating class, blah blah blah", and then the recruiter said two words that kinda blew my mind.

West Point.

They want to sponsor me to go to [m'kay] West Point. I did pretty well on a military aptitude test a few months ago, which apparently made me more than qualified to fill one of the 80 [m'kay] slots the National Guard has to send people to West Point.

So, yeah. Don't suppose anyone here has been in the military and has some tips about this sort of thing? I'm still kind of in a state of shock over this, especially since I was just planning on going to a community college and [poo].

Be careful not to 'sign' any commitment to the military, until you have a guaranteed (in writing) letter signed by a legitamite authority that you'll get the appointment to West Point. If they say you have to commit first, then they'll send your bid in...to me that's a Red Flag. I spent 8 years active service in the military. Once they have a commitment, they can pretty much do what they want...unless your commitment is contigent upon passing West Point (Get that in writing)

You'll also need several letters of recommendations and you'll need to write a letter to your state Senator asking for a letter of recommendation.

If it's a legit offer, jump on it....West Point is an opportunity of a lifetime. Even if you do not choose to have a military career.....West Point graduates pretty much write their own ticket in the corporate world. Heck...you could even join one of those "secret societies".
