As a mom who took to being eco-friendly a little late in the game I thought I would share some of the knowledge I've gleaned so far:

I no longer use baby wipes for my son's diapers, I use cloth wipes. Getting cloth diapers right before potty training made no sense at all. So here is what I do:

I got three dozen baby washcloths and washed them with Honest Laundry detergent. Then I took and made some of my Honest Wipe Solution using the following recipe:

2 TBSP Honest Shampoo/Body Wash
2 TBSP Honest Body Oil
4 Cups HOT water
5 drops Tea Tree Oil or Grape Seed Extract

In a bowl put your water in, then put then measure out the oil before the soap so that you're getting the full amount of soap. Add the Tea Tree Oil or GSE last. Wisk together. Either moisten wipes or use the solution in a spray bottle and spray your LO's bottom and them wipe clean with a cloth wipe.

The other thing you'll need to do is create a "Soak Bucket". I use this recipe:

3 TBSP Honest Shampoo/BW
3 TBSP Honest Laundry Detergent
2 TBSP Vinegar
8 Cups Hot Water

Mix together in a bucket. You can use this to soak your cloth wipes AND cloth Diapers. When you're ready to wash just dump the whole bucket in the wash machine and wash with your favorite laundry soap. I am just trying to be eco friendly and keep my son from coming in contact with too many toxic chemicals.

My babies are pretty much grown but the advice for keeping as chemical free as possible when they are young is excellent. As a mother I discovered vinegar, lemon juice and bi-carb are essential ingredients along with natural soaps and microfibre cloths. It was tough sometimes with the cloth nappies/diapers but the reaction my son used to get from the others made it the only way to go. I hope others appreciate your efforts NiteRunner and will use the tips provided =)
One thing I am learning now is that you can make their early life as chemical free as possible but when they get a part-time job they fill themselves with Big Macs and garbage anyway lol!!

Some good tips there. We are having another in about 3 weeks, so I need to get back into the swing of little ones. It has been 8 years since our last child.

This tip applies only on the delivery part of little ones...I know I have mentioned it before, but I feel it is important.

Stay away from the heat lamp that they use to keep the baby warm immediately after the baby is born.

For some reason the nurses always rolled this up behind me and turned the blasted thing on. It took me until the 4th kid to figure out why I kept feeling like I was going to pass out. After I figured it out, I was fine.

Just so you know, I have no issues with seeing blood or anything like that. I have watched and helped in getting people out of accidents. I gut and cut up my own deer. Heck, I have even given myself stitches in the leg. (plenty of beer to kill the pain) But the combination of no food and heat was too much for me.

Tell me about it Son, I had to be induced because I was in the starting stages of Pre-Eclampsia and I made the mistake of not eating beforehand. I couldn't nurse right away after giving birth because my arms were so weak because I was exhausted. I started getting induced at noon and gave birth after 6AM.

Oh, a pregnancy tip: If you're wife is diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes recommend Xylitol. Its a natural sugar substitute that tastes like sugar and does not have that OFF taste that the synthetics do, and it has health benefits as well. It helps strengthen teeth, and many other benefits.

When I run out of my Honest Laundry Detergent I plan on making a batch of my home-made laundry soap. You can google for many recipes, but I use the recipe on the Duggar (yes, the 19 kids and counting family) Family Website. The 5Gal bucket I made lasted 6 months.

One more thing I feel I ought to throw out there. If any Doctor ever gives you the horrible news that your unborn child will have a Disease or Disability, always always get more then one opinion. My sister was told that her daughter would be born with a severe heart condition she would not survive. The Doctor said she should decide if she wanted to continue the pregnancy. (Please this is not meant as a debate on abortion) After hearing that she went to 2 other Doctors who said they saw the markers for it but it was only a possibility, not a deffinate.

My Niece turned 2 last month, she love running around the house singing following the leader from Peter Pan. The point is, there is never anything wrong with getting a second opinion. Any good Doctor would never take offense at it. They are professionals but also human.
