You are incorrect. He can only see as well as everyone else. If for some reason it was CS gas and not just smoke, there is still opportunity for this person to be overwhelmed by those who are distant enough from the gas or just naturally resistant or have the presence of mind to hold their breath (and don't discount this as these scenarios generally are over in 30-60 seconds). I can say, having been hit with CS before, it's debilitating for some while others can still function, especially with the rush of adrenaline.

Open carry and/or concealed carry would've helped more so than the "no firearms" sign that I'm sure is hanging on the front door of the theater. And for what it's worth, I am 100% correct about this.

Way I see it, a whole bunch of frightened people with guns would be almost as damaging as one guy with the intent of killing everyone there. It's not as if everyone in that theater who would have a weapon in the case of open carry laws would have any clue of how to use it in an actual dangerous situation. All it takes is one person [m'kay] up and clipping someone else's friend to make everyone think that person's conspiring with the guy with the gas, and then you have a gigantic [m'kay] because everyone thinks everyone else is working with the killer. In theory, open carry laws would be fantastic because everyone would be an ice cold professional. In reality, you'd have a bunch of scared, normally gung-ho 16-20 year olds with guns. Better to just have armed security guards patrolling the place.

No thanks, I'm better off protecting myself.

There's 5 million people that live in Colorado in which less than 150k are ccw holders. That's less than 3%. I know 12 ccw holders personally of which only 3 of us carry every day, everywhere which amounts to 25%. It's pretty well known that most ccw holders get lazy and don't carry every day so that would be less than 50%. So let's go with the higher number of 50% and apply that to a theater in Colorado that may have as many as 300 people in it. So that means there are 9 ccw holders in the audience of which 4 or 5 are without, so that leaves you with 4 or 5 that are with. Not hardly a theater full of "gung ho 16-20 year olds. Also, most ccw holders are older as the licensing process is very expensive, not to mention there is no such thing as a 16-20 year old ccw holder anyway. You have to be 21 to legally carry a handgun.

Yeah I'm still two years away from being able to own a gun. I can't afford one yet anyway so that's fine. All my family has is this tiny ass little .22 revolver pea shooter. That's got to change.

Lol, I find it slightly humorous that the age you get to drink is the same as when you can own a gun. Because those mix great.[/sarcasm]

But I'll never drink. I've tried lots of different drinks in tiny amounts, didn't like any of it. It's just not for me. Neither is smoking.

You are also in correct matthew. He had a gas mask and he did have advantage. He shot while people could not see so.

Sadly, The Onion hit it right on the nail:
WASHINGTON—Americans across the nation confirmed today that, unfortunately, due to their extreme familiarity with the type of tragedy that occurred in a Colorado movie theater last night, they sadly know exactly how the events following the horrific shooting of 12 people will unfold.
While admitting they "absolutely hate" the fact they have this knowledge, the nation's 300 million citizens told reporters they can pinpoint down to the hour when the first candlelight vigil will be held, roughly how many people will attend, how many times the county sheriff will address the media in the coming weeks, and when the town-wide memorial service will be held.
Additionally, sources nationwide took no pleasure in confirming that some sort of video recording, written material, or disturbing photographs made by the shooter will be surfacing in about an hour or two.
"I hate to say it, but we as Americans are basically experts at this kind of thing by now,” said 45-year-old market analyst Jared Gerson, adding that the number of media images of Aurora, CO citizens crying and looking shocked is “pretty much right in line with where it usually is at this point." "The calls not to politicize the tragedy should be starting in an hour, but by 1:30 p.m. tomorrow the issue will have been politicized. Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if the shooter’s high school classmate is interviewed within 45 minutes."
"It's like clockwork," said Gerson, who sighed, shook his head, and walked away.
According to the nation's citizenry, calls for a mature, thoughtful debate about the role of guns in American society started right on time, and should persist throughout the next week or so. However, the populace noted, the debate will soon spiral out of control and ultimately lead to nothing of any substance, a fact Americans everywhere acknowledged they felt "absolutely horrible" to be aware of.
With scalpel-like precision, the American populace then went on to predict, to the minute, how long it will take for the media to swarm Aurora, CO, how long it will take for them to leave, and exactly when questions will be raised as to whether or not violence in movies and video games had something to do with the act.
The nation's citizens also confirmed that, any time now, some religious figure or cable news personality will say something unbelievably insensitive about the tragic shooting.
"Unfortunately, I've been through this a lot, and I pretty much have it down to a science when President Obama will visit Colorado, when he will meet with the families of those who lost loved ones, and when he will give his big speech that people will call 'unifying' and 'very presidential,'" Jacksonville resident Amy Brennen, 32, said, speaking for every other person in the country. "Nothing really surprises me when it comes to this kind of thing anymore. And that makes me feel terrible."
"Oh, and here's another thing I hate I know," Brennen continued, "In exactly two weeks this will all be over and it will be like it never happened."

What we do need is more people with conceal-and-carrys who can stop this early when it happens.
All Warfare is based on deception.

Offer the enemy bait to lure him; feign disorder and strike him.
Know the enemy and know yourself; and in a hundred battles you will never be in peril.

@Richdog

Boy did they ever get it right.

Can't wait till I'm 21 and I have the cash to buy a gun because this is a dangerous world we live in and you never know. Those people in that theater certainly didn't know. And I live in a city with over twice as many people as Aurora. The cops here suck too (no offense to them, they have NO funding at all). Thank god I'm not in New York City at least. NYC doesn't seem to get big huge shootings, just a steady stream of singular murders. Anyway, I digress.

The American public knows their tragedies by now, yeah. In two weeks this will be but a memory to most of the country. Aurora will remember it longer, but they too will forget until it's just the victim's families who remember.

Ah, fair enough then. I don't really know much about gun control laws, so thanks for the clarification there. In that case I suppose i'd be okay with it. I thought the age to own and carry a handgun was 18, and the thought of some of my gun nut friends actually trying to "defend" the populace kinda scared the [poo] out of me.
