If it had been any other two nations, people would have chuckled and moved on. But noooo, it had to be the Koreas.

It's disgusting that North Korea is allowed to participate in the Olympics.

How is it disgusting? Are we going to punish and isolate entire countries because they have an insane leader? That's counterproductive. I, for one, thinks it's wonderful to have North Korea in the Olympics. It's one step closer to its citizens experiencing the outside world. While it's only a small step toward the globalization of the nation, it's a good start.

For the love of God, please shut up. I can only take so much stupid before I finish my coffee.

As for the topic, North Korea is "that" kid from high school. If you got all the students from your class to walk across the football field, "that" kid would be the only one to step in dog [poo]. Unlucky with attitude. Bad combination.

You should never punish an athlete for his or her country's politics. My mom almost went to the 1980 Olympics for the United States, she ran track and field. Those of you who know your history know she didn't get to go. 4 years later, she tried to go again, and her knees had to have surgery 6 weeks before the Olympics. Not getting to go do the Summer Olympics is one of my mom's greatest regret's of her life. She would have kicked their ass.

So don't you [m'kay] dare say athletes shouldn't be allowed to play because of what their country does. I hate N. Korea's government, but not the country's people.

I serious doubt that they are some of the poor average people competing for N. Korea. And secondly, the Olympics are not about the individual people (although yes there can be some emphasis on it), but it's about the countries competing against each other. It can be sad when the Olympics is used as a game for politics, but I believe this is a different situation then that of the Cold War. N. Korea is still at war with S. Korea, they have an extremely horrible human rights track record, and more than likely they would attack America if they could.

As for Samonuh's point, it may be possible that it will be a step towards opening up the nation, but I doubt it ever will. The only help for their people is a complete change in leadership and style of government. However, the reason for my point was that allowing them in, is the same as symbolizing that the world if fine with North Korea, and a stab in the back to the people of South Korea (in my opinion, I don't know how S. Korea actually feels).

I stick with my position, but I do hope that you are right Samonuh.

@Bryant

The government picks the best athletes they can find, wherever they may find them. So yeah, generally they are just normal citzens. You think they only pick from the top 1% of the population or something? Or only people who are with the government?

Of course N. Korea is terrible with human rights, and I've studied extensively on the Korean War (which as you said is still ongoing). But the Olympics is about forgetting all about that, and coming together as a world in peace for friendly competition. Not allowing N. Korea to play accomplishes nothing good.
