Home page and email question

Postby MATTHEW'S_DAD » Thu Aug 23, 2012 7:24 pm

Ok, I'm going to attempt to dump Google. I currently use iGoogle for my homepage and gmail for my personal email. So my question is this, what do you guys use? Google is mining my emails for advertisers and iGoogle is about to be done away with, so what I want is a secure email that I can possibly tie in to my homepage. Also, I would like a more secure browser also in an attempt to foil advertisers. Anyone who knows me knows that simple is good as I am not computer savvy.

What little I know is just that. Little. But the browser I like is Mozilla Firefox. I get rid of any goofy toolbars and run it straight with no frills. Seems to work alright. I don't trust google so do not use it.

Firefox is the best browser.

Stick with Gmail: its far better than ANY other email service (assuming you want free email).

But seriously, I've tried yahoo, hotmail, aol, mail.com, and more.

In the end, Gmail is by far the best.

Here's another idea.

Do you own a website, like for your business or something?

Like everyone else said, Firefox is the best (in my opinion.) Hotmail isn't to bad, but I highly suggest NOT getting a Bellsouth.net email. It is so slow you will kill your computer. :grrr:

I use Gmail. You might be able to opt out of Google looking at your emails...

Other options include Hotmail (Microsoft) and Yahoo. I know Yahoo has a homepage, but I'm unsure about Hotmail. You should also be able to use an email given to you by your Internet Service Provider. Both Microsoft and Yahoo run advertisement powered search engines, so they too are/will potentially use your email to find preferred advertisements.

As long as your email-based advertisements are only displayed on Google, then any potential privacy problems should be at a minimum.

And since browsers came up in this discussion... I would suggest either Firefox or Chrome AND the adBlock plus add-on available for both.

Another option is, if you have a personal website and own the domain name, you often can setup email for free using that (i.e. matthews_dad @matthew's_dad.com).

Yes, that's an option too, I just assumed that he didn't have a domain name.
