The independent states of America

Postby (SWGO)Kren » Wed Nov 14, 2012 5:12 pm

Hi Guys,

Mainly to all you Americans, but other's feel free to comment.

Whilst reading the news I have come across articles relating to the independent states of America where people are completing secession petitions in a number of states. Is this something that is active in-between elections or simply as a result of a president being elected for a second term that is not liked by a percentage of the population.

I'd just be interested to understand the views of people?

Regards,

Kren

Secession cannot happen at this point. It's not demographically, economically, or militarily feasible. Most people understand this, and no government official is going to take any more action than to point and laugh. It's just a few people over-reacting to the election rhetoric, a few others with rosy delusions about "states' rights," and a lot of trolls joining in.

The only state that could feasibly secede is Texas, and that's very unlikely to happen considering that those voting for secession are a minority. Four years is nothing to a country, and barring some kind of catastrophe we'll be having another election in four years. And then people will get pissy about that, too. I think this talk happened last election as well, so really it's just more of the same.

Texas, IF we (yes we I live in Texas) did secede, would run just fine as our own country as we have all of what Cater mentioned above. Also it's less of a minority than it is that most of the population would LIKE to secede but don't fell like putting forth the effort to actually DO what we WANT. Most of us, I believe, are content to just wait a few more years at least to see how America is doing at the time, but of course I can't speak for everyone in Texas.

... Thus illustrating that the people who want to secede don't have the slightest clue what it would actually involve.

Texas would be ok, assuming that the US didn't impose any sort of economic trade change between Texas and its surrounding states. And as much as I would like to see Texans wiped off the face of the Earth (for the lulz) I just don't see that happy event happening.

As much as some Texans would like to have you believe it, they are just as bound to the union as anyone else is. Texas has neither a legal right to leave, nor a legal requirement to stay. All Texas has the legal right to do any longer is split into five separate, smaller states. And THAT ain't gonna happen. So all this secession hogwash is just smoke and mirrors. Once you join the Union, you cannot economically leave...unless you do it by a revolution. And you gotta have a damn good case to convince an entire state our size to be able to do that. Now go back to your library and keep reading and be a good robot.

That's the whole point. They can't. When the state governments and so many taxing entities and federal programs are so economically tied to the federal government for all its handouts, you will NEVER find a state government that will support one of these "grassroots" petition drives. Think about it. The hospitals, public health agencies, nursing homes, schools, and more all get access to federal grants, that while they may not be DIRECT funds, they do indirectly keep many of their organizations afloat. Without those funds, many would fail. The state governments gets federal highway funds to develop state roadways. The schools get meal funds to feed needy kids. The farmers and ranchers get federal subsidies for fallow land. And on and on. People are going to say "Hell yah I'm gonna support you" and then follow that with "you're gonna take away WHAT?" It just won't happen.
