Snow... how do I get rid of it?

Postby CommanderOtto » Fri Dec 28, 2012 6:10 am

I love the snow but I didn't know it was so much hard work to get it out of the way in front of the garage. A blizzard just passed through indiana and I have 5 or 6 inches to clear so I can get the car out.

so..how do you guys deal with it?

1. Do you shovel it? (I did, and my back is hurting so much...)

2. do you throw salt? I heard it was a bad idea because it breaks the concrete or something like that.

3. do you buy a snowthrower? is it commonn to use one of these or just the rich buy them?

4. you buy a lawn mower and turn it into a snowblower? I thought this might be the best idea because you only buy one machine and you can use it during the summer and winter!! but I don't know.... I saw this video of some guy who did it.

what do you guys usually do??

We usually don't get that much snow, but that lawn-mower trick.. man, I'm gonna have to pass that one on to my brother.. he's 19 and is certified HILLBILLY (its tattooed on his back).. I love it!!!

EDIT: There is this de-icer they sell by the jug in stores.

Lol... +1 to the lawnmower

EDIT: regarding nite's edit... sounds like a good idea but it also sounds messy. I already see red or blue liquid all over the place. Besides, I don't think de-icer will do this time. I have mountains of snow that are becoming hard ice. I would have to buy a truckload of jugs to get it out.

I use good ole fashion hard work...

make the kids do it.

Seriously though I use a snowblower. You could also find a landscaping company and find out if they do snow plowing. See if they will plow your driveway if you have anything over 4 inches or so. That way you can handle the light stuff with a shovel or cheaper snowblower ($250) and they can get the heavier stuff.

I use a 2012 Polaris Ranger 800 HO with a 6 foot plow. I put a weather proof stereo in it so I can listen to tunes while I plow.

I plow myself and 6 of the elderly neighbors driveways and don't even break a sweat.
i weep for the future

but considering what you guys said, snow plowing sounds good. A guy with a snowplow was passing by and "offered help". I didn't understand at first but now I see that there are a few people that are looking for opportunities to get some extra money. How much do these guys usually charge for clearing out the garage? I don't want to be ripped off

Part of the price will be determined on how big of a driveway you have. I would call a few different plow companies and find out how much they charge and also if they provide other services such as shoveling sidewalks. Sometime they do and sometimes they don't.

Otherwise I like the idea of drinking lots of coffee. :whistling:

Do you mow lawns during the summer? Find a nice hourly rate ($10/hour sounds fair) or 5 per half hour that way you get paid for a better portion of your time. I'm actually dealing with a similar issue. I've recently taken up sewing and will start selling stuff.
