My dad is a small business owner in the area and everyone knows that my parents and brothers hunt and defend their land (did you know that a porcupine can do some major damage to your livestock) with firearms.. no one in their right mind would try and burglarize either houses on the property.. the problem is...drugs and clear "I want to try to be the biggest redneck in Tillamook county" ego are in play here. Hubby threatened to just start taking the guns home one by one as he found them.... maybe that might be the wake up call...

I'll give you one for free - it doesn't count home invasions where criminals were deterred by a gun without actual shots fired. But don't throw around claims of "bias" just because you don't like the look of reality.

So, this study is reality? Do you really not understand how this works or are you being deliberately stupid?

People that 'know' you have guns in the house, likely won't attempt to enter without permission. Dogs are also a great front line deterrent and is the best house alarm there is, as burglars are acutely aware that Dogs will not hesitate to defend a family and can hear a cat fart 2 blocks away. However, burglars usually case homes to see when/where the best time to strike is. Others, especially drug users, don't think about where to strike beforehand very much, then there's others who will rape defenseless women in the process of the burglary. Hmmm...shoot the burglar in the head, or go thru life as a woman forever emotionally damaged knowing you were sexually assaulted because you could not defend yourself....Seems easy...I'd pick blow the [m'kay] head off!

Well, after the advice of a close friend Boose and I have come to a decision... we will be removing the bolts from any loaded gun we find and hiding them... We figure it might bring up the discussion if fire-arms are disabled. Might piss off my brother, but oh effing well.

Yes. The study shows us what actually happened in terms of gun violence at that place and time. If you have a problem with the methodology, fine - bring that up. If you have some evidence you feel is stronger, bring that up. But you don't get to ignore facts you don't like because "lol bias!".

I'm sorry if I was insulting there. I'm just tired of people who think that reality is something you can ignore by just rolling a [m'kay] will save to disbelieve.

For a source called "Conservative Daily News," I have surprisingly few issues with that article. I'm a bit rushed right now and will need to look at it in more detail later (and maybe find a version that wasn't "edited to streamline the argument"). I will say that I like this line: "Put aside emotions for a second, and really think about setting out to save as many precious individual human lives as possible."

However, it appears to have absolutely nothing to do with the topic we are discussing - whether a gun in your home puts you at more or less risk.

You know, I could link many different sites using Google searches that both refute and support gun control. Namecalling someone is not productive to this discussion/NiteRunner's problem.

Also NiteRunner, I would be very careful about doing this. If he has that "redneck" mentality and he realizes you guys are the ones modifying his guns he may do some pretty stupid things if he gets angry.

Here's hoping your solution sends a clear message to him to be more mindful of his family versus his personal beliefs about guns.

My point is that, any published "study" is, indeed, biased. Theres an agenda of the people doing the study; there is a conclusion they want to draw before they start. A hypothesis they have which they want to prove. It goes both ways- I wouldnt be quick to swallow any "studies" from the NRA either.
This isnt laboratory science where x is x and y is y. The people conducting the research are picking and choosing what data they use and where they get it from.
