No, you really aren't. I said it was fun and useful to prepare for any catastrophes, and then you pulled something out of your ass and said I was hoping for the world to end or some bull like that. If you can't see the usefulness of developing skills needed to survive a disaster while having fun doing so, then frankly you're a dimwit. Resource management? Pfft, who needs [poo] like that except for any leadership position ever? Learning how to set up shelter without too many materials within a short amount of time? When could you ever use that except for, y'know, camping or something ridiculous like that. Learning how to hunt with a bow? Hahaha, why would you ever want to do that? There's grocery stores, just go out and buy your food and never do anything fun or interesting in your life because statistics say you don't have to. Do you see where i'm coming from now?

Listen, you want to exhaust your time doing those things, be my guest. If it makes you feel happy and secure, fine. I was just giving my two cents on the issues. I'll take my chances that a doomsday is not going to occur within the next millennium though.

So now you're saying that in no way should people find it enjoyable to hunt, gather, garden, sew, build? That we should let "THE SYSTEM" (stores, government, "professionals") do it? Well, I'm glad that you're pockets are big enough to do things the "right" way... Some of us have families that rely on these things from day to day... When there is a bad hunting season my family (parents, siblings) can easily rack up DEBT because there isn't enough meat around..

Let's not carried away now here. Reread your first post. You stated that your primary motive for doing all of this was because you believe "we will face disaster one day." Not because you found them to be enjoyable hobbies. That's a totally different concept. You want to hunt? Be my guest. Animals are there for a reason.

And you guys in the US have to be more aware than quite a lot of other places that an event level extinction type scenario could happen in your own back yard. When/if Yellowstone and Long Valley Caldera's pop's their top's then it will cause very real problems in the US and the rest of the world. The same however can be said of any of the other super volcanoe events across the world such as Toba, New Zealand, Italy etc.

If you manage to survive something like this you certainly will need to have as many essentials and the means to defend what you have and your the family.

Well Sam, I waited a couple of days for your definition of "permanent apocalypse". Since you are unwilling, or unable to respond, I will make it as clear as I can. eg. Katrina wiped out whole neighborhoods in New Orleans and the surrounding areas. The people who died, or were never seen again and presumed dead would consider that to be a permanent apocalypse. Nothing is more permanent than death. Those that were stranded without food, clean water, electricity, police services, and medical assistance had to make do with what they had, which, with most of them was not a whole hell of a lot. Many more died in the days that followed due to exhaustion, dehydration, and exposure to the heat. This is just one example of people not prepared for the worst case scenario.

Whether the disaster comes in the shape of a hurricane, twister, blizzard, drought, electrical black out, earthquake, tsunami, terrorist attack, financial collapse, etc., being prepared is the best solution. Relying on government to come in and protect you, clothe you, feed you, and provide security is foolishness. In a major disaster, it can take weeks for help to arrive. Having a plan, an escape route, or even bottling water is better than nothing.

I don't mind that you find it silly. What you do if, God forbid, disaster strikes is entirely up to you. If you think it is stupid to prepare, that is your right. But scoffing at those that do wish to prepare for possible threats is childish, and I have seen nothing in your arguments to disuade the rationality of being prepared.
