Duel of Fates wrote:Well Sam, I waited a couple of days for your definition of "permanent apocalypse". Since you are unwilling, or unable to respond, I will make it as clear as I can. eg. Katrina wiped out whole neighborhoods in New Orleans and the surrounding areas. The people who died, or were never seen again and presumed dead would consider that to be a permanent apocalypse. Nothing is more permanent than death. Those that were stranded without food, clean water, electricity, police services, and medical assistance had to make do with what they had, which, with most of them was not a whole hell of a lot. Many more died in the days that followed due to exhaustion, dehydration, and exposure to the heat. This is just one example of people not prepared for the worst case scenario.

Whether the disaster comes in the shape of a hurricane, twister, blizzard, drought, electrical black out, earthquake, tsunami, terrorist attack, financial collapse, etc., being prepared is the best solution. Relying on government to come in and protect you, clothe you, feed you, and provide security is foolishness. In a major disaster, it can take weeks for help to arrive. Having a plan, an escape route, or even bottling water is better than nothing.

I don't mind that you find it silly. What you do if, God forbid, disaster strikes is entirely up to you. If you think it is stupid to prepare, that is your right. But scoffing at those that do wish to prepare for possible threats is childish, and I have seen nothing in your arguments to disuade the rationality of being prepared.

But if there's a disaster, all you gotta do is go to the grocery store and grab some food. Checkmate.

I think the disconnect here is our definition of a "doomsday."

It's the name of a show, we don't need to take it literally. And even if we did, the example DoF provided works here. Doomsday. Let's just look at it in a literal sense. The day that doom arives. It doesn't have to be worldwide, it could just affect your state, your city, even just your neighborhood. Doom can come from many forms, weather being by far the most likely. Katrina was certainly "doomsday" for a lot of people.

Edited because I feel like this is just a pointless argument that will continue to stir up more negative emotions.

Sammy, you haven't experienced life yet dude. Some of these folks have and I believe therein lies the disconnect.

Yep. You got me. Make sure your coupons don't expire. The price of chips and dip may go up though.

Funny connection here, yes?

I did all this to lower my cost of living, not to prep for a damn thing.

When sandy tore through New Jersey, power was out in my area for 14 days. I didn't even lose anything in the fridge.

Society is most certainly reaching a tipping point. Will it end in a "doomsday scenario"? I very much doubt it. If it does, "bugging out" is not an option. If someone wants my stuff, they better have a [m'kay] army. I live in a small valley in the center of a 1-2 mile diameter area of heavily wooded, extremely rough terrain. It's accessible from only one road lined with trees that could be felled enough to stop a tank.

I firmly believe all the "end of the world" [poo] we are inundated with is to prod the masses into readiness for, you guessed it, not a [m'kay] thing. It's fear mongering, plain and simple.

A population living in fear is much easier to control.

If you want to do these things, do them for better reasons than fear. Do it to screw the corporate farms, utility companies and the satisfaction of being as truly self sufficient as possible.

I mean, I'd say I have experienced "life" somewhat. It's all a matter of perspective of course. But it's not like I've never worked or faced hard times. Granted, I don't know the feeling of having to work full time to support myself yet, but you can't completely discredit my perspective and claim I haven't experienced life.

I would agree...but a small part of 'Dooms' day prepping is also the 'Bad' day(s) prepping. You simply don't think the World will end or get so bad that people will go hungry here. I get you, but, I also disagree. We're on a financial house of cards, that could fall apart quickly, especially since we're so tied to the cyberspace for transactions. You must have read what the great crash of 1929 did to families. Many went hungry, no jobs, no hope. So had they been better prepared and sacrificed some cash (if they even could) to store food, water and other survival necessities, they would have been better off.

Now that's just a part of what a Doomsday prepper doeas, but it could conceivably get worse that that crash by today's standards. The government is way in debt this time, and proping up the stock market artificially with the QEs, we have 11 million illegals, and too few jobs available, and government handouts that is unsustainable. The housing market got crushed, and soon the U.S. Dollar and real estate bubbles will likely pop and crash as well. Just a matter of time. How much is estimated to be within the next two to three years at most. We'll see.

Google doomsday and you get "end of the world" as the definition. This is like an astroid hitting the planet or the crust collapsing in on itself. (No Wulf I don't actually believe these things, they are just examples)

The thread started out as preparing for a doomsday event. The end of modern civilization as we know it. Hurricanes, stock market crashes, and earthquakes are not doomsday events. They are natural or man made disasters. It doesn't really take life experience to figure out the difference between the two.
