Sorry, but I'm more inclined to believe a scientific study conducted by experts in their field over a random, neocon over the Internet who brings pessimism and cynicism to every thread he goes, just because "I've seen some things man. I know it all, man. Nobody understand the world better than me, man. All other arguments are invalid because I'm just [m'kay] right."

You want to argue and Crater's points? Fine. But bring some [m'kay] evidence instead of just talking out of your ass. And no, that anecdote of your father doesn't count. Plus, I think his advice has affected to negatively more than anything. Suppressing years of verbal abuse, instead of speaking out against it. And now your turning the very same type of victims into the problem, because 'the world just isn't manly enough.' [m'kay] you.

the best thing is to give discipline when your kids are having tantrums (when the child is throwing things at you staying on the ground screaming and crying to get what he wants)... otherwise, in cases like this guy who was just having fun playing star wars and got bullied, then it is best to talk to your son and tell him it's all right and that he shouldn't worry too much about what other kids say.

I don't know... i'm not a parent but that's how I would do it.

Suicide never crossed my mind because nobody fed into any kind of "poor me" [poo]. My father told me to quit whining and man up about it. Thats what I did. Bullying only has an effect if you let it. Or, if everyone feeds into it.

This country is turning into a bunch of pansy ass, whining crybabys who get all butt hurt about every little thing that anyone says.

Makes me sick to my stomach.

I'm not saying I'm an expert on this, but I completely agree. Your father's a wise man and so are you.

I don't really get the argument of "my dad spanked me and I turned out just fine!" Is that all your dad did? He just spanked you and went "very well son, you are now fit to go and become great"? No. A good dad can enforce discipline with or without spanking. A bad dad can see a good dad spank a kid and go "see that's totally okay" and then go to town on his kids, thinking it's the same thing. Besides, to be perfectly honest, I fully back up what Samonuh said. I was abused by my dad as a kid, and even though I can turn that anger into humor more often than not, it's still greatly affecting me to this day. I'm strong, sure, but I really wish I didn't feel like I had to be. I don't think many here would say that i'm a bratty little dickhole except when i'm actively trying to be one, and i'd probably be a bit more pleasant on the whole were it not for me having to constantly keep myself in check.

Well, 'Abuse' and 'Discipline' are two different things, although a Parent may may think abuse is discipline, which is totally wrong. Glad you were able to keep your head on straight. My Father used his voice, and for me that was enough. But he always gave me good advice and that was a foundation for good discipline in myself. I passed this to my girls, and they all turned out fantastic. Spanking is okay when warrented, but to spank for small things is not constructive. Personally, I think what the problem kids lack today is solid guidance from their parents...passing on 'The Wisdom', being supportive, saying it's okay to make mistakes, so long as you learn from it, pick yourself back up and move forward.

I also think different situations warrant whether or not "man up" is a proper response. If a kid is down because he is failing classes or can't find a job, then be my guest and tell him/her to stop complaining and start doing. However, if somebody is being constantly told to go kill themselves or that they're a fat, useless [m'kay], it's not something that can be ignored or dealt with well. That requires intervention from higher authorities such as parents or teachers, because somebody is fourteen, a time when emotions play in extremes, and they are being told they're basically pieces of [poo] from fellow students, it's going to leave them with terrible self-esteem and self-respect issues.

I kinda laughed when I saw this in my mailbox today...the current issue of Time magazine. First thing that crossed my mind was this thread

but yeah, WD's example is more what I was trying to explain in my last post.
