well, we're in tornado season again. I've been preparing a backpack with some essentials in case I have to leave the house. I put some clothes, a towel, first aid kit, water bottle, and some cash. I had the idea for some time but there is some chance of a tornado tonight and then I thought it would be a good idea to start my project. Next thing i'm going to do is to buy one of those cheap prepaid cellphones and print a copy of my ID if I loose my original documents and put those inside that backpack.

Otto, if you own your own home, invest in a tornado shelter. A backpack with a few things is nice, but impractical when you cannot run from a tornado.

well the house has a basement and there is a good area with concrete walls and no windows... Anyway, as you said, the backpack is a plus.

that reminds me.. I wonder if tying myself to some pipe with my belt will actually work  hollywood :whistling:

I would say that it's a better idea to invest in a satellite phone rather than a prepaid one - it's not going to have any service in an emergency as bad as a tornado, i'd think. I don't really know much about the subject, but I believe satellite phones have really, really good service in emergencies like that since if i'm right, they don't actually run off towers? I dunno it's midnight and i'm trying to give out technical advice for [poo] I don't know about, so if i'm stupid then someone tell me.

A Sat Phone in that case would certainly be useful given the towers are either swamped with calls or just plain missing. However, from a practicality standpoint and the additional cost of owning one, one has to weigh whether they'd be better using the money toward constructing a shelter or supplies. It's all about budget and the not-knowing for sure what you will need living in 'Tornado Alley'. What those people 'could' have done is a mute-point. What they will do next is something else.
