That was a gif, they function like images but they are animations, use [img*][/img] with the gif URL in between the ][. and to add a picture, or an avatar, you can add one through you're user control panel at the top left of your screen. just go to "avatar" and paste an image URL.

The Fetts are Fate's signiature and the symbol is his profile picture. Go to the UCP to change your signiature and profile pic.

I'm always amused when people say that having friends on the internet isn't real life.

I have two really close friends to me. One lives down the street, the other lives across the country. They're both my bros and nearly consider them family and I get that feeling back.

There's nothing wrong with having internet friends, they can be just as close if not closer to you than people you meet in "real life" as Ain't puts it.
