Survival

Postby WD-40 » Fri Jul 26, 2013 11:11 pm

I remember an older thread discussing this to some degree, but ive no patience to search for it. but this involves a specific supply entity. I know a few have thought of this in some fashion, like Nite, and perhaps Haas, Dad, MD and Duel(?).

My wifey went to a site and paid a membership fee of $37 without my advanced knowledge called 'Patriots Supply'
http://www.mypatriotsupply.com/mobile/default.aspx#Home
I'd like some feedback by any 'mature' parents or non-parent survivalists with regard to post economic crash what-to-dos. My co-workers would argue that the best investment is not precious metals to buy/barter with, but a combination of gunpowder and lead, with the means to 'use' these materials. Arguably, that is just a couple of many needed items. I guess my bottom line question is not just what to do if or economy should tank, but what you actually think of this 'website'.
Thanks.

It looks like a great site for farmers. Of course, in a true survival situation, the farm would simply be taken by the ones with lead, powder, and boomsticks...

Precious metals require an economic system based on currency to function. A post crash situation would more than likely revert to a barter system. Instead of soft metal, hard metal would be far more valuable as would the skills to forge items.but in a post crash world it looks like you guys are talking about, you have to figure a good eighty percent plus of everyone over the age of thirty five dies in the first two years.

By 'precious metals' I'm talking about the silver and gold coins and bars that people would use as a form of payment for some tangible object or supplies, as currency would be worthless. Silver Eagles are the only US minted pure Silver coins. Easily recognizable, and distinguishable from fake coins. That's an example. Seeds to me are fine if you are away from civilization without the need to fight off people, let alone animals. Short of some hole in the ground with all the water and 'food' (hence the website) you need and the means to defend it, it would seem you're screwed unless you're Grizzly Adams the Mountaineer. I've been grabbing all the shampoo and soap bars from all the freakin hotel rooms I've been staying in as these are likely very valuable bartering items, as people will not have easy access to them if the world goes to crap, and 'want to feel Human' again when they start to stink over time.

Barter system would mean booze, toilet paper, valuable skills (ie, farming, wood working, water purification, 1st aid). There will be no crash, just a slow controlled descent. Most crashes in history are the result of losing a catastrophic war, plague, etc. Read Atlas Shrugged as it gives an excellent example of the controlled descent that I'm referring to. I think it most resembles what we are doomed to experience if we don't change our ways.

For the supposed "crash", we have a small collection of first aid books, firearms, and have been learning how to grow our own food. We store water and have emergency bags packed. For the controlled descent, we have learned to curb our spending, have paid off everything minus the house and we know how to survive on PB&jelly sandwiches. I would say the best prep is to be mentally prepared for living conditions outside of your comfort zone. Accept the thought that you may be doing odd jobs to make ends meet when you're 80. Learn that electricity, running water and communications are all luxuries and could vanish at any time. 100 years ago a good time was sitting around the fire after a long day of hard work and reading books and playing games with your family. It would probably be the best thing that ever happened to some families.....

Most of what you guys are talking about is pretty good. For me and my family I have tried to cover all the bases. Stocked up and little bit hidden away. I am hoping that whatever comes, I have the flexibility and the ability to adapt to the situation. I think that will be key. Getting stuck in a plan A, plan B, and plan - oh [poo] is not the mentality you need. If the situation calls for a hunker down and gut it out approach, I am covered. If the situation calls for a skedaddle with the clothes on your back, I am covered.

I really hope booze and cigs become the new monetary system, I will be loaded. :whistling:

I'm not going to be happy till I buy an old mine and convert it into a nuke-proof bunker, with an independent food, power, and water supply.

So that won't be till I get rich. So... a year or so. THINK POSITIVE RIGHT?

You're gonna want to stock up on things like freeze dried food. You'll want to invest in a good food dehydrator and some canning supplies. Build up your food supply. Also women/mothers will want to start sewing "mama cloth" and cloth diapers and keep them around cause the disposable variety will go out the door fast. Learning how to make soap might not be a bad idea.. I am a Gold member of the American Prepper Network. http://americanpreppersnetwork.net/ucp.php?mode=login

Making a bug out location may be wise. I plan on bugging out to my parents if SHTF.
