I think you should still be able to direct connect to servers with Xfire and the like.

You just lose the built in server browser.

You also lose the CD key functionality, so you will have to switch to IP banning.

This is not possible. Xfire gets its data from the masterserver, parses the data into categories, then displays it on the xfire client. If the masterserver is shut down, Xfire will not display the servers. Also, as far as I'm aware, the Xfire client doesn't allow you to directly connect to a server. Besides, even if this was possible, it's not feasible; not everyone knows what an IP or port is, and chances are, they certainly won't know how to do that in Xfire.

Also, don't give them any ideas dammit! :whistling:

Seems to be some misunderstandings here. Long story short, this is the end of the larger multiplayer community. It won't be completely killed off, there are community based efforts like OpenSpy which is intended to recreate the Gamespy master server. Buggy from what I've heard, but functional for SWBF1 I do believe.

Most SWBF1 MP players use http://www.tunngle.net/index.php?l=en nowadays. The SWBF1 community already went through this more than a year ago, except it was vastly more sudden. At least we got a warning this time.

I could easily convert the ban-list to a white-list as well.

Assuming that another company doesn't step in to fill some of these slots, and i have no doubt they might for the more popular games, I doubt SWBF2 will be among them. The game is almost a decade old now. There are less than 150 concurrent players online at pretty much any time now. I'm relatively sure Disney had to pick up support for a few SW games but I don't think SWBF2 was among them. Could be wrong on the Disney thing though, but I wanted to say they were contracted for online support of games at the time of purchase until 2017. If none of that happens, then the game is pretty much over. Bryant cites how SWBF1 uses tungle, but doesn't mention that population dropped by 50-80% of an already extremely dead game. Even at this stage in the game, the majority of the population are either "newbies" or just players who don't have contact with others through constant use of clan/group sites or steam/xfire.

[04:30] (SWGO)SWINE*FLU: I reckon so.

So can someone explain in dummy speak. :whistling:

Is there no more SWGO for BF2 or is it just going to be that we have to connect through a different program?

Mandy, I totally disagree with what you've said. I believe in the opposite.. a game that lasted as long as SWBF2 (wonder if it's one of the longest running?), deserves to be included ( if you're right about some entity taking over). I mean, hasn't it's longevity mean something? There's always a new face playing this game, some players that have been playing this game since day one, and quite a few "old timers" show up often and all say the same thing.. "I forgot how awesome /fun this game is".Ask Haas, he's a perfect example of what I'm saying. As admin I see that a lot.

I think the closure is strategic. Not that I like it mind you. What a better way do create further interest in the new Battlefront game due out in 2015. If there isn't anywhere for us to play, we will be ravenous for the new game when it comes out. That way there won't be those who will be content to just play BF2 instead of getting the new Battlefront. It creates greater interest and sales in the game.

They did the same thing with Star Wars The Clone Wars by ending the show to build for Star Wars Rebels in 2014 and Hasbro has limited the Star Wars action figures so collectors and kids will be hungry for them again when they are released in 2015. Just my two cents.

the only actual direct connect function was never completed. bits and pieces of it are still in the code, but its not actually functional. the client relies on the gamespy NATNEG protocol to establish a udp connection to the server, even when +connect is specified in the command line. CD key functionality is handled by the keyserver and a list of keys, but banning those keyhashes is handled explicitly by the server manager and swbfront2 server software and will not be affected.
