One would only truly need a graphing calculator in second year Algebra and Precalculus, but even then it is only used sparingly. It's only after these classes that it will come in handy, and even with just a T1-83 will do fine. But if you have the money now, and it has to either be the TI-84 Plus or Silver Edition, then I would go with the former since it's probably cheaper, but either one will do.
