I'm not a fan of Deen, but I also feel she is being victimized by opportunistic so-called 'victims', and ambulance chasing attorneys. The 'N' word is slung around by black people so often everywhere, that I don't consider it any more offensive than a black using the word 'Honkey'. For this to hold up in a court is a joke, and she is only being targeted because she is a rich celebrity.

I say she got the royal shaft on this one. In too many areas racism is a one way street.... all about the minorities, whether they be Afr.American, Latino, or Arabian, typically get away with calling the whites names, but when those words are turned on them, its all out war..

Example -- in high school I got called a "Straight Up Virgin Honkey B****" by one of the African Americans that attended my high school (cause I wouldn't "get fresh" with her brother) and nothing happened to the girl who called me that, but then a week later a friend called him a "Cherry Popping Gangster" (he slept with a different friend then dumped her) and the friend got EXPELLED!! The N word did NOT come out, but what he said was "racist" enough to be punishable. There is a double-standard when it comes to the use of racial slurs depending on who directs the words and who is the target.

It's pretty impressive how you can manage to propose discussion on a topic, and then spend exactly one sentence staying on subject before resorting to personal anecdotes that are irrelevant to the discussion at hand. Also, who the [m'kay] cares about what someone said in high school? Jesus christ, i've already forgotten most of the stupid [poo] that was tossed around back then and i'm only a single year out of it.

It's not that she cares, it's that she was trying to make a point about racism in America. If you publicly insult a minority, you get some serious [poo] thrown at you. But when a minority insults you, nobody gives a damn.

I've talked plenty of [poo] to black guys before. Yeah, sometimes people play the race card. So the [m'kay] what? If we're just going to bring a bunch of useless anecdotal trivia to the table, i'm sure all of us have some inane babble to spew. One time when I was like 9 I started a fight with a black girl and got my ass kicked. I got ISS for the rest of the day and she got suspended for a week. In this situation I may have gotten off easy because of my race, or maybe it's because she beat the ever living [poo] out of me. Wonder which one makes more [m'kay] sense. Not to mention, I somehow doubt that Nite is a terribly unbiased party in her little drama, so it's even more irrelevant than it already was. Just because someone says something that agrees with your views doesn't mean they're worth defending, kid.

The biggest mistake she made is when she was asked if she had said that N-word and her response was "Yes, of course,". "Of course" is not a smart response when someone is accusing you of something.

Narg, thanks for sharing your story. I love it when people share their personal stories regarding the topics we discuss. It gives us all a chance to get to know each other in ways that discussing the fine nitty gritties doesn't.

And in regards to my high school years, I'll admit, I was raised in a primarily racist household. My dad throws around the slurs like you wouldn't believe. It was until I was 18 years old and had my drivers license and a car that I broke out and started exercising my free-thinking brain. My dad was also the vice chairman of the school board when I was in high school, which made a lot of things that I had bottled up inside of me (such as my sexuality) a bit unbearable.

The incident I shared with you happened when I was 14 years old and was a freshman. A very mentally programmed young lady. I would use the word child, but at the time I had responsibilities that were no where near the realm of "childish". My parents were popping out babies, I spent most of my time at home either caring for my young brothers or helping my parents run their business. At 14 I had a 3 year old brother and a 1 year old brother. Unless I knew for certain that a phone call wasn't business I answered the phone "Hello, ***** **********, (name) speaking, how can I help you?"...I never had long-term friends cause all my time out of school was spent at home, I didn't do ANY extra curricular activities except OSSOM (Operation Student Safety On The Move -- kinda like MADD for students) and Odyssey of The Mind and the only reason I participated in those was because I had a ride for all events. I never got my license till I was 18 cause my parents time came at a premium.

Fast Forward to today -- I have friends of all races. Regardless of my upbringing I have NEVER myself used a racial slur towards anyone. I have offered both an African American couple AND a homosexual male couple myself as a surrogate.

In regards to bias, at any age, one has to have the opportunity and ability to think for themselves. If things are programmed its not a surprise that someone will act in the fashion they were programmed. Programming can happen while growing up, while in an unhealthy romantic relationship, or even by means of society. Programming can be in the nature of racism, sexism, or ways of raising your children. The government also programs some of our ways of thinking. Corporations program people.

------------------------------

Now back to Mrs. Deen's issues. Its all about extortion. http://www.scribd.com/doc/148832518/Pau ... -Testimony states that she did NOT use the N word when in the planning phases of her brother's wedding. She's only admitted to using it once, and it was on a police report in 1987, so she had NO choice but to cop to it. No wonder she used the phrase "of course" in her testimony. Any reluctance or coverup would have been futile and would have turned away supporters who are backing her because of her integrity.

I find it hard to believe the only time she used it was in a police report...
The far more likely version is that's the time it slipped out to strangers and, unfortunately for her, was documented.

Rofl, Haas, I live in the metro-Detroit region, and generally speaking not in the "nice" parts. It would be almost statistically improbable for me to say [plz ban me] in a public place and not be over-heard by a black person. It's these [m'kay] uppity white people that seem to get their titties in a knot when I say it. God I hate white people. Such a busy body group. Neighbors always mind my business. [m'kay] off and get a life puh-leaseeee.

On a more serious note: It's hilarious that anyone still gets uptight about what other people say about them. Especially when it comes to something that is entirely out of your control.

Doesn't matter if the word is hurting anything directly. It's still reinforcing the institutional racism that we haven't gotten rid of yet.

Before anyone calls [citation needed] on that, let me link this: http://www.princeton.edu/~pager/race_at_work.pdf . New York City, 2005. Quite an interesting read. For example, white felons apparently have more luck in the job market than blacks with clean records.
