To answer Crater's question, which I 'm sure he already knows the answer to, is that as the Roman Empire decayed and fell the Church was the only Europe spanning organization with any clout left with most of their subjects barely knowing how to wipe their asses. So they naturally took over a great many responsibilities. And thus we had the loss of really great social structures like the legal tables of Rome, which wasn't really a problem that the church endeavored for, but one that happened naturally when every ruler was essentially illiterate.
That being said, marriage has gone through so many redefinitions, even in Western culture that arguing that traditional marriage has always been one way is incredibly ludicrous. Every divorcee has lived through a change in the view of traditional marriage. I'm pretty sure that you can no longer go out rape some chick and then slap a ring on her like the good old days. (If only, right?) Fathers generally don't choose who their daughters marry exclusively. The traditional "dowry" has shifted more into a general wedding gift sort of idea. Then you have bridal showers, bachelor's night out, etc etc. I guess the simplest way to think about it is this way. If you loved someone, and someone told you that you couldn't marry them, how the [m'kay] would you feel?
